Tax Reform?

So sick of our local corporate media (eg. WBBM) calling the GOPer tax cut for billionaires, ‘Tax Reform’.

Illinois Going Broke?

If you refuse to take water out of Lake Michigan, I guess you could claim we're in a drought. If you refuse to tax the people with money, I guess you could claim we're going broke. Finally if you put a bag over your head, I guess you could claim it is night.

Some Compromise

What digby said:

It is preposterous to say that making the elderly give up some of their already painfully meager stipends in exchange for the wealthy having to pay taxes at the rates they paid during the Clinton years is in any way a fair compromise.

Taxing the Rich is an Attack on Small Business

Notice how the moment anyone talks about raising taxes on the richest Americans, GOPers attempt to pivot the discussion to 'small businessmen'? Here's Rep. Paul Ryan doing the GOPer pivot on 'Face the Nation' when asked about his plan to lower taxes on those with "top income":

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI): "If you have really high tax rates what you end up doing is you penalize small businesses. You have to remember, Bob, most successful small businesses file their taxes as individuals. Most of our jobs come from these small businesses. The President is proposing to raise the top tax rate on these small businesses to 44.8 percent. We don’t think that’s good for jobs. We don't think that's good for economic growth. And when we tax our employers a whole lot more than our foreign competitors tax theirs, we lose, they win and we don't want that."

Obama: 33 Seniors X $6k = Tax Break for Me

This was my favorite part of Obama's speech on fiscal policy:

They want to give people like me a $200,000 tax cut that's paid for by asking 33 seniors each to pay $6,000 more in health costs. That’s not right. And it’s not going to happen as long as I’m President. (Applause.)

No Serious Crisis Left to Waste

Good and Bad

The Good:

Cheering for a tax hike feels unnatural, but cheer we will. After years of delays, Illinois lawmakers early Wednesday finally embraced the inevitable: raising the state’s personal and corporate income tax rates.

The Bad:

Scare Tactics from Amazon

I don't know if I ever want to shop from Amazon again. Here's what they're sending by email to all their Associates:

"We regret to inform you that the Illinois state legislature has passed an unconstitutional tax collection scheme that, if signed by Governor Quinn, would leave little choice but to end its relationships with Illinois-based Associates."

In other words, if passed, we'll dump you. Unbelievable.
