Comforting News About the GOP

Apr
26

NPR's Mara Laisson gushes:

"[Congressman Paul Ryan] is the intellectual leader of the party right now. And even though other candidates aren't embracing all the specifics in his budget. His budget _is_ the GOP's fiscal platform as of the moment."

It's hard to convey how she emphasized the word 'is' in that line.

Stand by Cairo!

Apr

From CapitalFaxBlog:

I think we need to dust off our quite detailed invasion plans designed to capture territory from St. Louis to University City. The Cardinals kinda suck this year, but they could be ours within days. Maybe the preznit can divert some of those drones he’s sending to Libya to assist our endeavors. Their first mission would be to blow up that levee.

The Cost of Doing Too Little

Apr
25

Excellent point by Ezra Klein:

The story behind QE2 echoes the story behind the stimulus -- and much else that we’ve tried since the financial collapse. In 2007 and 2008, a truly extraordinary event reshaped our economy. But our political system remained much the same. So though various government entities attempted to mount an extraordinary response, our policies, particularly as we got further and further from the collapse of Lehman and more and more used to high unemployment, became quite underpowered when compared to the events they were meant to address. And then, having not done enough to make a major dent in the problem, they become discredited because they’ve failed to make a major dent in the problem, which in turn made it even harder to amp them up to a point where they’d be effective. Doing too little to start, we’ve learned, makes it harder, not easier, to do more later on.

Liberals in Congress Bad at Self-Promotion?

Apr
24

Interesting comment by Rachel Maddow on a segment looking into why the Congressional Progressive Caucus' proposed budget isn't being given more attention.

Rachel Maddow: "I will say that we get lobbied all the time on stuff to cover and you would think a show like mine would get lobbied all the time to cover all the liberal things. The sum total of lobbying that we've had on uncovering the progressive budget has been liberal wonks tweeting about it. That's sort of been it."

[Begins at around 13:10 in the original clip.]

Taxing the Rich is an Attack on Small Business

Apr
18

Notice how the moment anyone talks about raising taxes on the richest Americans, GOPers attempt to pivot the discussion to 'small businessmen'? Here's Rep. Paul Ryan doing the GOPer pivot on 'Face the Nation' when asked about his plan to lower taxes on those with "top income":

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI): "If you have really high tax rates what you end up doing is you penalize small businesses. You have to remember, Bob, most successful small businesses file their taxes as individuals. Most of our jobs come from these small businesses. The President is proposing to raise the top tax rate on these small businesses to 44.8 percent. We don’t think that’s good for jobs. We don't think that's good for economic growth. And when we tax our employers a whole lot more than our foreign competitors tax theirs, we lose, they win and we don't want that."

Obama: 33 Seniors X $6k = Tax Break for Me

Apr
14

This was my favorite part of Obama's speech on fiscal policy:

They want to give people like me a $200,000 tax cut that's paid for by asking 33 seniors each to pay $6,000 more in health costs. That’s not right. And it’s not going to happen as long as I’m President. (Applause.)
