Freakonomics Wants to Take Politics Out of Politics

Sep
20

The NPR show, Freakonomics, thinks that the best way to improve our political system is to do away with our two political parties [link]. Yeah, right. Such a solution only makes sense if you totally ignore what each party stands for - which of course is what Freakonomics does.

I also admire the total lack of alternative opinions from maybe elected officials, etc. The party that passed Obama Care is not the same as the party that gave tax cuts to billionaires:

“The Affordable Care Act, also known as ObamaCare, was passed in 2010 with zero Republican votes in Congress. President Trump’s 2018 tax-reform bill? Zero Democratic votes.“

To ignore the obvious differing agendas suggests an obvious agenda on the part of Freakonomics.

SEIU 73 Nurses on Strike at UIC

Sep
17

Stopped by the striking nurses at UIC this afternoon. There were union groups on both the east and west campus but the majority were naturally on the west side near the medical center. They were nice enough to give me one of their 'SEIU 73' buttons! Great people!

Track My Paper Ballot

Sep
03

NYTimes put out a pretty complementary article on how elections are managed in Massachusetts. They also included this interesting feature for tracking ballots online:

Ms. McReynolds also pointed to an online ballot tracking system that Massachusetts set up this year, which allowed voters to track the status of their ballots and allowed them to be proactive if any problems arose.

What America Needs

Sep
01

Great lecture given to current president by Mayor of Portland:

What America needs is for you to be stopped, so that we can come back together as one America while recognizing that we must demand that all people, black, brown, white, every color from every political persuasion, pull together and hold all people accountable in stopping racism and violence. We together are peaceful again under new leadership that reflects who we really are. We the people of this great nation.

Biden's choice for VP goes on, "[Trump] inherited the longest economic expansion in history from Barack Obama and Joe Biden. And then, like everything else he inherited, he ran it straight into the ground." [source].

3 Months of Hell : U.S. Economy Drops 32.9% In Worst GDP Report Ever (NPR)

Jul

"GDP shrank at an annual rate of 32.9% in the second quarter — the sharpest economic contraction in modern American history.

The economic shock in April, May and June was more than 3 times as sharp as the previous record — 10% in 1958."

Resign Rather Than Run?

Jul

Really I don't recall an earlier period with so much opposition from the president's own party. Will we be talking reelection or resignation?

Someone’s Listening

Jun

Good news from our friends and neighbors up north:

Biden’s emphasis on Milwaukee, meanwhile, reflects [campaign manager] O’Malley Dillon’s insistence that reclaiming Democrats’ Upper Midwest “Blue Wall” isn’t just about white voters in small towns. In 2016, Clinton won Milwaukee County by an even wider percentage margin than Obama managed in 2012. But her raw vote total in the state’s most Democrat-rich county fell about 39,000 votes shy of Obama’s — far exceeding her statewide deficit to Trump.

Small Government?

May
29

Isn’t Trump a Republican? Aren’t Republicans 'sposed to be “small government”?

Threatening that you will censor an independent website based solely on orders by you as ‘commander in chief’ (link) -- that doesn't sound all that ‘small government’ to me.
