GOP: Bankers vs. Zealots

Nov
19

deadElephant.gif In the perennial battle between bankers and zealots for the heart and soul of the Republican Party, the WaPo's Kathleen Parker comes out against the latter:

"[T]he evangelical, right-wing, oogedy-boogedy branch of the GOP is what ails the erstwhile conservative party and will continue to afflict and marginalize its constituents if reckoning doesn't soon cometh."

The Conservative Achievement

Oct

Channeling Steve Benen yet again:

It just doesn't occur to these [GOP] party leaders that the Republican governing philosophy doesn't work. The party had it all just a few years ago, did exactly what it wanted to do, ran over Democrats as if they were speed-bumps, and saw all of their ideas fail miserably. As the nation moved away from the GOP as a result, these activists concluded they'd learned a valuable lesson -- the Republican Party wasn't nearly conservative enough.

McCain - Doing Difficult Things Badly

Oct
27

Steve Benen makes a great point:

out_of_gas_150x100.gif For weeks, the pundits have noted that the financial crisis has seriously undermined the McCain campaign. That's true, but it overlooks why -- McCain has handled the crisis really badly. It's not enough to simply note that a focus on the economy is necessarily good news for Obama; McCain had a chance to deal with this crisis effectively and he blew it.

Too Pathetic Even for 'Famous Last Words'

McCain: "My friends, We've got them just where we want them'".

Sounds a little like Inspector Clouseau just before the ceiling caves in and he gets hit with a ton of plucked chicken feathers.

Take Your Average Plumber Making $250k a Year...

Oct

Super Mario the plumber Why is it that Republicans only start to notice you once your income soars above six figures?

I guess that's when all their polices finally have a chance to work. I mean, vouchers for schools, tax credits for health care -- that's only going to work if you can bring to the table some serious money on your own.

For the rest of us, it's 'you're on your own'.

Swann Song of the McCain Campaign

Oct
05

Everyone's talking about McCain's impending shift to a more sleazy campaign. It's the underlining assumption of the WaPo article that people have been quoting:

With just a month to go until Election Day, McCain's team has decided that its emphasis on the senator's biography as a war hero, experienced lawmaker and straight-talking maverick is insufficient to close a growing gap with Obama.

Under GOP, National Debt Goes Gazoom

Oct

'Tax and Spend, Tax and Spend' -- that's what they're always crying -- until they get into office, when it becomes 'Spend, Spend, Spend'.

The Swamp bring attention to the fact that our National Debt topped 10 Trillion Dollars by the end of September.

McCain Campaign Dying to Get Back to the Lipstick Wars

Sep
28

The McCain Campaign is working hard to put the financial crisis behind it. From the WaPo:

out_of_gas_150x100.gifAides hope that, if Congress passes a rescue package, McCain's actions will be seen as having contributed [sic] to the deal. More important, they hope an agreement will push the economy story off the front pages for a while.

Senator McCain, Please Stay in Washington

Sep
26

My latest letter to the McCain Campaign:

Senator McCain,

Please stay in Washington.

We know refusing to go to Mississippi for the Debate and claiming you've "suspended" your campaign is nothing but a desperate publicity stunt. We know economics isn't your strong point, and that your role, such as it is, in the negotiations to hammer out a bailout agreement has been less than constructive.
