Chicago Tribune Doomsday: '1/12/11'

Oct
25

Funny. Every time I hear good news about employment in Illinois -- here's one from today's Chicago Sun-Times titled "Chicago Unemployment Rate Declines to 8 Percent, Lowest Since '08" -- I'm reminded of the following prediction of doom and gloom offered up by the Chicago Tribune Editorial Board in January of 2011:

Tribune Goes All Greek on Obama Budget

Feb
14

The Chicago Tribune Editorial Board goes all Greek on Obama's proposed budget, not bothering to mention that we still are in a deflated economy with millions of unemployed. They even single out (not surprisingly) probably the only benefit going to all working people, namely the couple of bucks coming from the payroll tax cut. For them it's all about debt. But what would you expect from a group of dandies gone bankrupt?

Tribune Launches Much Improved Site Redesign

Aug
10

It's 2009 and the Chicago Tribune has only now figured out what it takes to design a website. Still, you have to hand it to them, it's a vast improvement over the previous iteration. They even went back to the old letterhead.

Working Class Credentials Sham

Jul
06

A couple of people have commented on Ross Douthat's piece in the New York Times eulogizing the "democratic ideal" supposedly represented by Sarah Palin because she became a "success" (such as it was) even though she hadn't gone to "Columbia and Harvard".

Frankly, if you spend all your time in office representing the interests of the rich and powerful, it really doesn't matter if you were were born to a bunch of sharecroppers and went to a one-room school house.

The Power of Krugman

Jun
08

Who knew? From Bloomberg:

June 8 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. economy probably will emerge from the recession by September, Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman said.

"I would not be surprised if the official end of the U.S. recession ends up being, in retrospect, dated sometime this summer," he said in a lecture today at the London School of Economics. "Things seem to be getting worse more slowly. There’s some reason to think that we’re stabilizing."

Dueling Editorials: Chicago Tribune v. NY Times

Jun

It's not that I disagree with anything in this editorial from the Chicago Tribune. It's just that I get the impression they knew they had to come up with something but couldn't quite find anything particularly original to say:

Radical Bill Ayers dogs Chicago Sun-Times, even on Memorial Day

May
25

Working that 'Bill Ayers' angle seems to be an obsession for whoever's putting headlines together for the Chicago Sun-Times. In this one, what we have is an article from the AP about the routine activities of Obama as POTUS during Memorial Day. Ayers' only appearance is completely minor and indirect as one of 60 signers of a petition that in the article's own words is "ignored" by the White House.

Guy with Heath Insurance Explains Why You Can't See a Doctor

Apr

The Editorial Board of the Chicago Tribune never ceases to disappoint. Here's their latest attempt at delaying universal healthcare -- complete with warmed-over talking points circa 1993. Nothing learned, nothing remembered.

The column goes everywhere from denying that this is an urgent problem to warning that they're going to take away your private insurance.

Here's my email to them:

Chicago Tribune Sees Parallel Obama Press Conference in Parallel Universe

Mar
25

Did this guy see the same press conference I saw?

There were no smiles on Tuesday night, no memorable moments, no attempt by the president to capture the sense of drama or anticipation that has surrounded prime-time news conferences by prior White House occupants.
