Investigation-Shy Republicans

Feb
03

From the party that gave us Joe McCarthy and Ken Starr, suddenly they're turning squeamish when it comes to investigations? They actually thought they could make the following a condition for approving designee (now Attorney General) Eric Holder in the U.S. Senate:

Shortly before the [confirmation] vote, the tone of the debate turned sharp as some Republicans pushed for a pledge from Mr. Holder not to prosecute intelligence agents for using harsh tactics during interrogations.

GOP Marching Orders on Jr. Senator from Illinois

Jan
13

The GOP Marching Orders have already come down:

"Every time voters see Roland Burris, they'll think of that other notorious RB, Rod Blagojevich. Burris wants this Senate seat so desperately that he'll even accept it from a guy who allegedly tried to sell it....

Durbin: 'We've clearly reached an impasse.'

Jan
09

Is Senator Dick Durbin hitting the brakes on Burris? Here's part of his remarks from a press conference courtesy of Progress Illinois:

"At this point, we've clearly reached an impasse. The Illinois Supreme Court has said, 'Our state has done all it needs to do under its statutes and constitution to fill the vacancy. We're not going to do anything, nor require any officer of the state to do more.' The Senate rules say, 'More needs to be done.'

Seating Burris is an Embarrassment to the State of Illinois

Jan
07

I'm sorry but you cannot separate the person who got the seat from the utterly corrupt and probably criminal process that led him to getting it.

The fact that Burris accepted this is all you need to know about his moral character.

And if anyone is hoping to forget this, don't worry: we'll be reminded of it incessantly through the months and years of Blago's criminal trial.

This is an embarrassment to the State of Illinois.

Blago is Toast. Toast Don't Nominate U.S. Senators.

Dec

Illinois SOS Jesse White:

As I have previously stated publicly, I cannot co-sign a document that certifies any appointment by Rod Blagojevich for the vacant United State Senate seat from Illiois.

Although I have respect for former Attorney General Roland Burris, because of the current cloud of controversy surrounding the Governor, I cannot accept the document.

Politico Now Blaming Obama for Having 'No Role' in Picking Replacement Senator

Dec
25

The following ended an article in Politico titled "Obama's Five Rules of Scandal Response":

"To the extent that the report succeeds in its goal of establishing the distance between Obama and Blagojevich, it necessarily raises the question: Why was the president-elect and leader of the Democratic party playing no role in a key appointment to national office being made in his home state, and by a Democratic governor?"

First Impeach, Then Select

Dec

Illinois_seal.pngAdd me to the thumbs-down column on calling a special election for U.S. Senator. We have an approved-upon method of replacing a senator and suddenly we're going to throw that out and do something completely different? That seems like bad policy to me.

Senator Ted Kennedy

Nov
18

I hope every adult in this country points their kids to Senator Kennedy as one of the most positive examples we have of one man's commitment to the public good.

Forget all the cheap cynicism you hear all over the place -- it's being mouthed by a bunch of blockheads. This guy, Senator Kennedy, has come back practically from his deathbed to make sure everyone in this country has access to health care.

He's an example for us all.

Stunt of the Day by John McCain

Sep
24

Talk about presumption: McCain's wants to "suspend the campaign" so he and Obama can deal with the crisis on Wall Street. Huh? Who the hell does he think he is?

He's merely running for president. Until 11/4, both he and Obama have their old jobs which is being a senator.

What's so earthshaking to a senator that he has to suspend his campaign and return to the Senate after barely showing his face there since last April?
