Add me to the thumbs-down column on calling a special election for U.S. Senator. We have an approved-upon method of replacing a senator and suddenly we're going to throw that out and do something completely different? That seems like bad policy to me.
The problem, at least up to now, isn't how we select a replacement, or in other words, the method -- even the Republicans were okay with that. The problem is the guy occupying the office of Governor who'll do the selecting. And everyone agrees, we don't want him to do it.
Happily enough, there is a regular and approved method of fixing this problem which doesn't require suddenly rewriting the rules, and that's namely, to impeach him -- provided he doesn't resign ahead of time.
So that's the game plan. That's playing by the rules. To suddenly change everything on the fly and make things up as we go along is a model of mismanagement that we ought to leave to the other side.
