You've got to be a citizen to vote in this country but interest in the success of Barack Obama goes beyond our own citizens; it goes beyond our own borders and extends to all people of good will throughout the world.
What 8 years of Republican Ascendancy have made us forget is that the vast majority of people on this planet mean us well and want us to succeed. They admire what we've accomplished and are willing even to accept our leadership provided we remember to lead by example.
And in order to do that, as Hillary said this evening, we have to start "acting like Americans again". Amazingly, Barack picked up on exactly the same theme, calling Americans a "decent, generous, compassionate people, united by common challenges and common hopes".
"And every so often," he continued, "there are moments which call on that fundamental goodness to make this country great again."
That's the America the world wants to see. They can't take a 3rd Bush term anymore than we. The hope then that we succeed is universal. It's only the ability to effect this outcome that is uniquely in our hands as Americans.
Barack said it again tonight: we are the "last best hope on Earth". Part of that hope resides in each of us. It consists of what we're willing and able to do to get this country back on the right path and to make sure that it's Barack Obama taking that oath on January 20th.
In other words, it's time for us to get moving. We have the whole world behind us.
