Fruits of Austerity

I watched both parts of the extremely compelling documentary, "Apocalypse: The Rise of Hitler" [h/t Yves Smith]

Interestingly enough it mentions Hitler's 'pseudo social discourse' (i.e. his stated sympathy for the unemployed, 'I feel your pain', etc.) What it lacks is a discussion of why there were so many unemployed in the first place, namely due to the policy of austerity promoted by German Chancelor Brüning.

This omission is unfortunate. Bad times bring out the worst in people. The Nazi rise to power was relatively quick going from irrelevance in 1928 to largest party four years later. It's helpful in avoiding mistakes of the past to clearly identify root causes.
