Steven Benen quotes a truly disgusting remark by WaPo Columist, David Broder:
...Democrats really are isolated from the military. Harry Truman had been an artillery captain; John Kennedy and Carter, Navy officers. But Bill Clinton did everything possible to avoid the draft, and Obama, motivated as he was to public service, never gave a thought to volunteering for the military.
Our record may not be perfect but it is no worse and in many ways a whole lot better than the (dis-)loyal opposition who showed their disrespect for the military when in power by sending them on a ill-thought out mission to Iraq with deadly consequences.
The notion that Liberals/Democrats are estranged from the military while the GOPers walk with them hand-in-hand is nothing but a blood slur. It's partially explainable by the fact that appropriating symbols of patriotism and faith for one's own political ends is a GOP way of life.
Somebody not paying attention might think GOPers are closer to the military but for Broder to publish this smear is outrageous and requires major push-back.
