The main argument for supporting Burris is that Blagojevich is still the legally elected Governor of Illinois, that he has the legal authority to appoint someone to the vacant Senate seat and that nothing illegal seems to have taken place in the final choice. I call this the 'It's the Law, Stupid!' argument.
But first, since when did we settle for such a low standard? We have every right to assume that the process is kosher. The standard ought to be whether we've got the best guy in to do the job. That's when we go from simply having a warm body sitting in the Senate Chamber to someone who truly 'represents' the state of Illinois.
That's why Senator Durbin's approach is interesting and worthy of support. Assuming for the moment that they keep to it, basically he's saying, 'okay, we'll go with the guy the Governor appoints -- so long as the Governor is Pat Quinn'.
How more legal can you get? What's not to like?
