Ohio Diary: Day 2

By leo - Posted on 31 October 2008

Today was our 2nd day in Ohio and the best so far. We slept off the travel fatigue of our first day and were raring to go.

We got to the Walnut Hill Office at around 9:30am. There already was a group of people waiting there for canvasing.

They needed help in Claremont County which some distance from Cincinnati. I drove with one of the other volunteers -- a college student from Louisville going to college in Cincinnati.

We went to the Field Office in Batavia for training. It was right across the street from the local GOP office. Basically the training consisted of going through the canvassing form -- which is similar to the form they use for phone-banking that I became familiar with on the day before.

My colleague and I drove around the semi-rural area knocking on maybe 40 doors and making about half that number of 'contacts'.

As usual, we ran into a large variety of people. Even the ones for John McCain were polite. As anyone who's ever done canvassing can tell you, it's an invigorating experience.

Anyway, we made it back to the Cincinnati Office a little after six.

Last Guest at the Terrace Hotel

When we got back to the Hotel, a guard in the front asked me what I was doing there.

"Trying to get to my room," I replied.

The guard then told me that the Hotel had closed down and that I would have to stay someplace else.

I was astounded. The last thing you want to hear after a day banging on doors for someone is that you have nowhere to stay. Worse, all my stuff was upstairs.

It took a while to straighten things out but I eventually was able to book a room someplace else.

You can read more about the Hotel Closing from this article in the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Obama Coming to Cincinnati

So yesterday's rumor was accurate. Obama is coming to Cincinnati on Sunday evening! It's first-come, first-serve, at a Stadium near the University of Cincinnati.
