Crunch Time

Election Day is only two weeks away.

It's important to set aside some time from now until Nov. 4 and devote it to helping get our candidates elected both here in Illinois and around the country.

On the weekends there's carpooling and canvassing. On weekday nights, there's phone-banking and postcard-writing. Taking the day off and helping out on Monday (11/3) or election-day Tuesday (11/4) is also an extremely important way of making a contribution.

People talk about not being able to afford "four more years" of George Bush. The way things are going, it's not clear we'll have four more years to find out. It's only with Barack in the White House and progressives in Congress that we can even look at the next four years with something approaching optimism.

All around us we're witnessing how a democracy, an American democracy, self-corrects itself; how in the worst of times, the best of people's natures shine through.

The coming election is an essential first step in putting our country back on the right path. By helping out through 11/4, we'll be able to say that we were part of it.
