The Perils of Ballot Initiatives

Imagine a world where we could pursue a progressive agenda without being distracted with cruft like this (from the ACLU's Ballot Initiative page):

  • Arizona - Proposition 102: "Marriage - Only a union of one man and one woman".
  • Arkansas - Act 1 Initiative: Would "ban cohabitating couples from adopting or fostering children".
  • California - Proposition 4: For the third time in four years, "Mandatory parental notification laws" for teens wanting an abortion.
  • California - Proposition 8: Would "eliminate marriage for same-sex couples".
  • Colorado - Amendment 46: Would "ban a broad range of race- and gender-conscious programs".
  • Colorado - Amendment 48: "...Bestows legal rights to fertilized eggs in an attempt to outlaw abortion".
  • Florida - Amendment 2: Would "ban domestic partnership registries".
  • Nebraska - Initiative Measure 424: Would "ban a broad range of race- and gender-conscious programs".
  • Oregon - Measure 61: "Mandatory minimum prison sentences".
  • Oregon - Measure 58: Would "impose arbitrary limits on English language Instruction in public schools".
  • Oregon - Measure 64: Would "basically restrict political speech and association rights of public employees and non-profit organizations".
  • South Dakota - Measure 11: "sweeping ban on abortion", "...poised to have a national impact. Its real purpose is to overturn Roe v. Wade in the Supreme Court."

Sen. Durbin was right when he expressed worries about a Con-Con for Illinois: "Don't kid yourself, the first issue is going to be gay marriage," he said. [h/t ProgressIllinois]

Things are bad enough in Illinois. We don't need this.
