Whopper of the Night

Apr
03

Sounds like it's retirement-time for Mark Shields. Here's his latest whopper:

I don't think bipartisanship is dead. I think you'll see it on health care. I think the possibility of an overwhelming majority in the Senate passing and backing health care. I think you'll see it elsewhere, as well.

If you can't get Republicans to vote on a Stimulus Package, who in their right mind would expect an "overwhelming majority" with their help on health care?

Daley on Blago: Illinois has "moved on"?

Apr
03

Talk about sweeping things under the carpet:

Mayor Richard Daley today said Illinois already has “moved on” from the corruption scandal involving former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was indicted Thursday along with five others, including his brother.

The Virtues of Protest

Apr
03

I think Matt Yglesias has been going to the wrong protests:

"Getting people to come out every once in a while hold a 'protest' is, by contrast, pretty easy. And in the right frame of mind, it’s even fun. I’ve had fun doing it. But it doesn’t really change anything."

Picketing and other forms of protest are routine ways that progressives can make their voices heard.

Silver Lining to Economic Cloud

Apr
01

Looks like we dodged the bullet on this for now:

Mayor Daley's $2.5 billion plan to privatize Midway Airport has run into turbulence -- and it just might be grounded entirely -- because of the nation's credit crunch and Wall Street slide, City Hall sources said Monday.

Show Your Support for Wal-Mart Workers

Mar
28

Since we're not likely to see Rick Santelli in front of a Wal-Mart's, mad as hell about lousy working conditions there, Wal-Mart Watch has a way for you to show your support for a class of people who apparently aren't on Rick's radar.

You can take a picture of yourself with a sign "I support CHANGE for Wal-Mart Workers", then upload it to their site. More info here...

Health Care Plan must have Public Option

Mar
28

It's great to see Gov. Dean gearing up to make sure we get a 'Public Option' in the much anticipated Obama Health Care plan.

Anything less and what we'll be dealing with isn't a health care plan but yet another expensive taxpayer-funded bail-out -- this time of the insurance companies and big pharma.

Whither Eastern Europe?

Mar
26

You know, I think we're painting "Europe" with too broad a brush. There's western Europe that most people think of (Sweden, France, etc.) when they're bringing up the better support networks.

Chicago Tribune Sees Parallel Obama Press Conference in Parallel Universe

Mar
25

Did this guy see the same press conference I saw?

There were no smiles on Tuesday night, no memorable moments, no attempt by the president to capture the sense of drama or anticipation that has surrounded prime-time news conferences by prior White House occupants.
