The 9th Congressional District Dems held a kick-off rally in Evanston today. Great chance to see a whole bunch of old friends -- including Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky who's speaking to the audience way in the back of this photo.

They're trying to raise the minimum wage in New York. Of course 'Americans for Prosperity', funded by billionaire David Koch, is against this because 'any minimum wage increase would increase unemployment, especially amongst the young'.

If you've been following Alderman Scott Waguespack the past couple of days, you'll notice that his new pet project is allowing trucks to serve food on the streets of Chicago. How this is supposed to improve neighborhood conditions is beyond me since basically these meals-on-wheels merchants will be competing with small businesses, namely traditional restaurants, that have far more fixed roots in the community -- for all the obvious reasons.

If you listened to rightwing accounts, you'd think our founding fathers were trying to set up some kind of theocracy. That's hard to jive with actual relics from the past such as the penny from 1792 that, in place of the current-day motto, 'In God We Trust', sported the rather secular sounding, 'Liberty Parent of Science & Industry':

The coin's design is telling about the period in time when it was struck. Where current pennies read "In God We Trust," the Miss Liberty prototype instead says "Liberty Parent of Science & Industry."

The states in blue are the ones to avoid.

Incredible report out of Greece. For their Independence Day, most people are being excluded -- that's right, excluded! -- from the parade area for fear of anti-austerity rioting. Even the oranges growing on trees represent a threat:
