Small Government?

Isn’t Trump a Republican? Aren’t Republicans 'sposed to be “small government”?

Threatening that you will censor an independent website based solely on orders by you as ‘commander in chief’ (link) -- that doesn't sound all that ‘small government’ to me.

Tough Times for Baby Boomers

May
08

I have a confession to make: I'm what you call a 'baby-boomer'. That's what you are if you were born between the end of WWII and 1964. Of course there are different categories -- I personally am what's called a 'late boomer' but apparently assumptions are made for all of us. That said, WP has an interesting (and I would say distressing) piece titled "Millions of Baby Boomers are Getting Caught in the Country’s Broken Retirement System" (link).

Basically it relates problems that -- what I would call 'early' -- boomers are having surviving financially. The 401k accounts haven't worked out. People are losing their jobs and are being forced to cash out on their savings, etc. They’re taking Social Security early resultIng in far lower monthly payments. The key take-away is that things are hardly sugar-coated and if anything, they don't look like they'll be getting any better.

Never Forget

Ben Wikler: "Milwaukee voting locations were reduced from 180 to just 5. Voters who risked their health stood in lines for hours waiting to cast ballots. Thousands who requested absentee ballots weeks ago never got them and were disenfranchised entirely."

Just mix Liz’s results with Bernie’s and only then compare with Joe’s (more here).

Public Uprising

Feb
17

From "Bill Barr Must Resign" by Former U.S. Dep. Attorney Gen. Donald Ayer:

“Bill Barr’s America is not a place that anyone, including Trump voters, should want to go,” he continued. “It is a banana republic where all are subject to the whims of a dictatorial president and his henchmen. To prevent that, we need a public uprising demanding that Bill Barr resign immediately, or failing that, be impeached.”

Media’s Out-of-Focus Focus

Feb
11

We’re only a couple hours away from actual election results in New Hampshire so speculation might seem as unnecessary as premature. That said, my general impression at least for the past few days is that the focus is on Bernie, Buttigieg and Klobuchar (for some reason) while ignoring or downplaying Elizabeth Warren. You hear this on radio, you hear and see this on tv. Even in newspapers and even in articles focusing on Warren (here’s an example from NYT), the best they can say is,

“... [S]ome veterans of losing campaigns wonder if her best 2020 moments have passed.”

So I guess the Media consensus is, it’s ‘Liz the Write-off’. (Hope not.)

Step by Step, Drop by Drop ...

Dec

So (highly blacked out) emails have been released to the Center for Public Integrity indicating involvement by the Trump administration in halting funds to Ukraine.

I wasn't that old when Nixon was impeached but I do recall it was a slow, graduated process, where more and more details continued to come out. That's what I think we're witnessing here as well.

Update (12/29/2019): Drip, Drip, Drip... Incredible article in today's New York Times, "Behind the Ukraine Aid Freeze: 84 Days of Conflict and Confusion" (link).

Update (1/27/2020): Drip, Drip, Drip... New York Times again, "Trump Tied Ukraine Aid to Inquiries He Sought, Bolton Book Says" (link).

Wrong Side of History

Dec

Yee Gads, these people have the world upside down. The British election results -- Boris Johnson and all -- aren't a model for our own election next year. Rather they're a reflection to a certain extent of what happened here in 2016. In both cases, the wrong guy won. That's not going to happen next year.
